Dark Wizard — MU Online Season 21 Guide

The Dark Wizard is one of the three classes MU Online shipped with, and the one that has been extended the most. Every season since has handed him another spell, and by Season 21 his base list runs from Energy Ball at level 2 to Soul Seeker at level 160.

He is built entirely around Energy. Energy is his damage, his mana pool and the gate on almost every spell he wants to cast — and unlike every other class in the game, Vitality gives him only 1 HP per point. That single number explains the whole class: enormous reach and area damage, and nothing at all to absorb a hit with except Soul Barrier.

Everything below is read straight out of the Season 21 server files (SkillList.xml, SkillTreeData_3rd.xml, ItemList.xml, CalcCharacter.ini and the DefaultClassType table), and every item picture is rendered from the Season 21 client models.

Basic Information

Property Dark Wizard
Weapon Staffs — 31 of them, the only Dark Wizard weapons that carry Magic Power
Off-hand Shields — 7 models, no Magic Power on any of them
Back slot Wings: Heaven → Soul → Eternal → Angel Wings → Integrity
Starting town Lorencia
Stat points per level 5
Maximum attack speed 284
Base skill list 26 castable spells, 5 of them Dark Wizard exclusives
Master skill tree 71 nodes (Grand Master) — the third largest in the game
Steepest requirement 1,217 Energy for the Dark Devil Armor; 1,160 Energy for Meteor Storm

Starting Stats

A fresh Dark Wizard begins with the highest Energy of the three original classes and the lowest Vitality-to-Life multiplier in the game.

Strength Agility Vitality Energy HP Mana
18 18 15 30 60 60

How the Dark Wizard Grows

These four multipliers come from the DefaultClassType table and decide how a Dark Wizard scales. The Vitality column is the one worth staring at.

Class HP / level Mana / level HP per Vitality Mana per Energy
Dark Wizard 1 2 1 2
Dark Knight 2 0.5 3 1
Fairy Elf 1 1.5 2 1.5
Magic Gladiator 1 1 2 2
Dark Lord 1.5 1 2 1.5
Summoner 1 1.5 2 1.5
Rune Wizard 1.2 1.8 2 1.5
White Wizard 2 2 2 2
Lemuria Mage 1 1.5 2 2
Crusader 2 2 2 2

Every other class in MU Online converts a Vitality point into 2 or 3 HP. The Dark Wizard gets 1. Pouring points into Vitality on a Dark Wizard buys you half of what it buys anyone else — which is why the standard build ignores it and leans on range, Soul Barrier and a party instead.

The five Dark Wizard exclusives

Of the 26, only five belong to the Dark Wizard alone. Everything else is shared with the Magic Gladiator, Lemuria Mage, Rune Wizard, Alchemist or Summoner.

Meteor Strike 160 1,073 7 4th class single target at the longest range in the class
Meteor Storm 160 1,160 6 4th class area attack, 500 ms cast delay
Soul Seeker 160 1,115 7 Highest base damage in the list at 125, and the standard 4th class main attack

Master Skill Tree — Grand Master, 71 Nodes

At level 400 the Dark Wizard becomes a Grand Master and starts earning one master point per level. The tree has 71 nodes across three boxes and every node caps at 20 points (a handful cap at 10), so no character will ever fill it.

How big is that, really?

Node counts computed from SkillTreeData_3rd.xml for all sixteen 3rd classes:

Soul Barrier gets three nodes and 60 points

No other single spell in the Dark Wizard tree is reinforced three times. Between Strengthener, Proficiency and Mastery you can spend 60 master points on one defensive buff — a fair chunk of a character's lifetime budget, and the backbone of the PvP build.

Node Max points Mana AG
Soul Barrier Strengthener 20 77 24
Soul Barrier Proficiency 20 84 26
Soul Barrier Mastery 20 92 28

The 4th master skill tree

At level 800 the Soul Wizard unlocks a second tree with 129 nodes, again one point per level. It reinforces Meteor Strike, Meteor Storm and Evil Spirit, and carries the shared Magic Circle branch (Poison Storm, Frozen Slayer, Bloodying Hit) that every class gets.

Dark Wizard Staffs — Every Tier Rendered

A staff is the only Dark Wizard weapon that carries Magic Power, which is what actually scales his spells. Physical damage on a staff is close to irrelevant. From the Bloodangel Staff onwards every mastery staff sits at attack speed 30.

Dark Wizard Shields

The Dark Wizard is one of the few casters with real shields — the White Wizard, Summoner, Slayer, Rage Fighter, Gun Crusher and Illusion Knight have none at all. None of them carry Magic Power, so a shield is a pure PvP trade: defense and the Shield Block master node instead of a two-handed grip.

Dark Wizard Armor Sets — Every Tier Worn

Each render below is the full five piece set on the character model, straight from the Season 21 client. Defense is the sum of the five pieces at +0 with no options.

Before level 380

Nothing here is a real decision — you wear whatever drops. Grand Soul and Dark Soul are the two that matter, because both carry a full set bonus a Dark Wizard actually wants.

  Set Level Total defense
Pad set Pad — 21
Bone set Bone — 43
Eclipse set Eclipse — 106
Sphinx set Sphinx 1 80
Grand Soul set Grand Soul 1 136
Legendary set Legendary 150 105
Dark Soul set Dark Soul — 179

Level 380 and up

This is the real ladder. Note the step from 400 to 400: the Dark Devil set is not a mastery set, but at 245 defense it beats the first mastery set, Bloodangel Wizard, at 229 — if you can reach the 1,217 Energy it demands. That requirement is the single steepest stat gate on any Dark Wizard item.

Dark Wizard Wings

Wings are the Dark Wizard's back slot from level 150 onward. The tier number in the item data is the class evolution the wing belongs to, not its defense rank — which is why Wings of Power, at 700 defense, is still a 3rd class item.

  Wings Level Defense Class tier

How to Play a Dark Wizard

Energy first, always. Agility buys a little attack speed and defense, Strength buys nothing except the right to wear your armour, and Vitality is worth half what it is worth to anyone else. The only reason to add anything but Energy is to clear an item requirement.

1. Soul Seeker caster — the default

Everything into Energy above the armour requirement. The numbers to aim at, in order: 1,052 for Nova, 1,058 for Expansion of Wizardry, 1,115 for Soul Seeker, 1,160 for Meteor Storm and 1,217 if you intend to wear the Dark Devil set.

Master points go into One- or Two-handed Staff Strengthener and Mastery, Minimum and Maximum Wizardry Increase and Grand Magic PowUp first, then the Evil Spirit, Decay, Ice Storm and Inferno strengtheners. Soul Seeker is your main attack from 160 onward; Meteor Strike covers the same 7 square range when you need a second button.

2. Soul Barrier PvP build

Same stat priority, different tree. Sixty points across Soul Barrier Strengthener, Proficiency and Mastery, plus Steel Armor, Protection Shield and Shield Block — and you carry a shield, which most casters cannot. This is the Castle Siege and open world build, and it is the only way a Dark Wizard survives being focused.

3. Nova bomber

Built on Nova, Meteor Storm and Inferno with Nova Strengthener and Nova Cast Strengthener. It is the biggest burst the class has and the worst sustain in the game — Nova alone is 180 mana and 45 AG per cast. Party content only; it does not hold up solo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stats does a Dark Wizard need?

Energy, and then more Energy. Add Strength and Agility only to meet the requirement on the armour you want to wear, and skip Vitality — a Dark Wizard gets 1 HP per Vitality point where every other class gets 2 or 3.

What is the best Dark Wizard skill?

Soul Seeker at level 160. It has the highest base damage in the list at 125, reaches 7 squares, and costs only 90 mana and 16 AG — cheaper per cast than Meteor Storm and further than almost anything else in MU.

Can a Dark Wizard use a shield?

Yes — seven shield models, ending with the Dark Devil Shield at 25 defense. None of them carry Magic Power, so a shield is purely a defensive choice. The White Wizard, Summoner, Slayer, Rage Fighter, Gun Crusher and Illusion Knight have no shields at all.

Why does Soul Barrier get three master nodes?

Because it is the only defensive tool the class has. Strengthener, Proficiency and Mastery take 20 points each — 60 in total on one buff, which no other Dark Wizard spell comes close to.

Should I rush the first mastery set?

Not necessarily. Dark Devil, a non-mastery level 400 set, totals 245 defense against the Bloodangel Wizard set's 229. If you can afford the 1,217 Energy, Dark Devil is the better wear until Darkangel at 600.

What is the best Dark Wizard staff?

Imperial Wizard Staff at level 1,600 — 571 Magic Power and 347–355 damage. Before that, the Temple Guard Wizard Staff at 1,500 with 474 Magic Power is a big jump over the Lightning Staff's 361.

Which wings does the Dark Wizard use?

Wings of Heaven at 150, Wings of Soul at 215, Wings of Eternal at 400, Angel Wings at 800 and Wings of Integrity at 1,200. Wings of Magic, Wings of Angel and Devil and Wings of Power sit outside the main ladder.

How big is the Dark Wizard master tree?

71 nodes as the Grand Master, which is the third largest of the sixteen 3rd classes behind the Duel Masters (77) and High Elf (75). The 4th tree adds another 129 nodes at level 800.

How many skills does a Dark Wizard have?

26 castable spells in the base list, five of which no other class can learn — Energy Ball, Soul Barrier, Meteor Strike, Meteor Storm and Soul Seeker. Earth Prison and Illusion are learned in the master tree.
